Nigeria influencer arrested after seizure of cocaine worth $28m destined for the UK

BBC World · 2 hours ago

Nigerian authorities have arrested a social media influencer known as "KC Luxury" on suspicion of links to an international drug trafficking network, after seizing nearly $28m (£21m) worth of cocaine destined for the UK. Afolabi Kazeem Micheal, 49, who has around 700,000 Instagram followers and presented himself online as a luxury goods dealer, was detained at Lagos airport as he tried to board a flight to Paris. Officials allege he was the Nigerian "arrowhead" of a cartel moving cocaine from South America through Nigeria to Europe and Asia; he has not commented on the allegations and has not been charged.

Nigeria's National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) said 184.5kg of cocaine was found hidden in boxes at a Lagos courier facility on 3 August, before Micheal's arrest ten days later at Murtala Mohammed International Airport. He was reportedly carrying over $12,840 in cash across three currencies plus jewellery said to be linked to the trade. A second suspect, 33-year-old logistics worker Lawal Mujab Kehinde, was also detained, and the NDLEA said further arrests had been made in the UK by overseas counterparts. Agency head General Buba Marwa said the case showed the value of international cooperation and vowed to pursue other network members.
