Explained simply
The National Ice Hockey League (NIHL) is part of the UK’s domestic ice hockey system. Hull Seahawks and Sheffield Steeldogs are clubs from neighbouring cities, so matches between them are local derbies as well as league fixtures.
Ice hockey is played on an indoor rink, with teams trying to shoot a puck into the opponent’s goal. Players can be sent off temporarily for breaking rules, giving the other team a power play with an extra skater; these moments can create important scoring chances.
