Nintendo is hunting for a Switch 2 engineer who could help bring VRR to TV mode and next-gen consoles

GamesRadar+ · 2 months ago

Nintendo has opened a job posting for a senior display engineer position requiring over five years of experience with display connection standards such as HDMI, DisplayPort, and related technologies. The role explicitly lists Variable Refresh Rate and HDR as preferred qualifications and mentions involvement with display drivers for "current and future products," indicating potential work on both the existing Switch 2 and successor platforms.

Variable Refresh Rate dynamically synchronises a display's refresh rate to the console's frame output, eliminating screen tearing and visual stuttering. The Switch 2, released in June 2025, currently supports VRR only whilst in handheld mode; this capability is disabled when the device is docked and connected to a television. Earlier Nintendo patents had suggested television-mode VRR was in development, and this hiring move suggests the company is progressing toward implementing the feature for docked gameplay.
