Nintendo opens up Fire Emblem with the gigantic Fortune’s Weave
Nintendo has extended the open-ended design philosophy behind titles such as The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom to its Fire Emblem series with Fortune's Weave, a new instalment for the Switch 2. Rather than forcing players down a single fixed path, the game allows multiple storylines to be pursued within one large playthrough, giving fans of the tactical role-playing series far greater freedom over how they progress and build their teams. According to The Verge's review, this flexibility makes it the reviewer's favourite Switch 2 game so far.
The game is structured around four hero routes plus a concluding act that unites them, letting players restart and experiment with its many mechanics and stat-building systems, including the ability to merge character stats across routes. Story progression begins with a prologue introducing the protagonist's quest to defeat a demon lord, followed by two-part hero storylines set in a tournament city and a subsequent war, before converging on a final battle against the undead. Combat follows the classic Fire Emblem turn-based formula, requiring varied squads and tactical positioning, supplemented by "blessings" that can undo mistakes, while separate dungeon-based RPG-style battles were described as less engaging than the main strategic combat.
- Fire Emblem: Fortune's Weave brings open-world freedom to the series on Switch 2.
- Players can follow multiple hero routes and merge character stats.
