Nintendo Switch 2 Officially Just Got One of the Decade’s Best Games

Polygon · 1 hour ago

The Nintendo Switch 2 has received an enhanced edition of 1000xResist, the Peabody Award-winning narrative adventure that developer sunset visitor 斜陽過客 says can now "be played as intended". The game originally launched in 2024 on the original Switch and Windows PC, but its debut on the underpowered handheld required technical compromises; the Switch 2 version resolves these, making the release notable as another example of the console improving access to acclaimed indie titles already praised for their storytelling.

The Switch 2 edition, released on Thursday, offers 4K resolution in TV mode, 1080p in tabletop and handheld modes, and an improved frame rate, and costs $19.99, with a free upgrade available to owners of the original Switch version. The roughly ten-hour game follows Watcher, a clone of pandemic survivor Iris, exploring themes of diasporic identity and generational trauma, and is now available across PlayStation 5, Xbox and PC as well as both Switch consoles. Physical editions are available to pre-order via Fangamer, including standard and deluxe versions with bonus items such as artwork books, posters and trading cards, with shipping expected to begin on 12 February 2027.

Nintendo's Switch 2 console, released as a more powerful successor to the original Switch, has been building a reputation for making it easier to enjoy well-regarded independent games that struggled to run smoothly on the older hardware. 1000xResist is one such game: a narrative-driven adventure released in 2024 that won a Peabody Award and was praised for its handling of themes like memory, identity and family history, told through the story of a character called Watcher, a clone of a woman named Iris who survived a pandemic.

The game was already available on the original Switch, PC and other consoles, but that Switch version had to run at reduced visual quality because of the hardware's limitations. Its developer, a studio called sunset visitor 斜陽過客, has now released an enhanced edition for Switch 2 with sharper resolution and a smoother frame rate, alongside versions for PlayStation 5 and Xbox.

This matters because it reflects a broader pattern of newer, more powerful consoles giving critically acclaimed smaller-budget games a second chance to be experienced as their creators intended, potentially introducing them to audiences who missed them the first time round.
