Blizzard has confirmed that Diablo 4 will not receive any further large-scale, paid expansions, as the studio shifts its main development focus to the upcoming sequel, Diablo 5. Diablo game director Brent Gibson made the announcement at BlizzCon, telling PC Gamer that the team feels it has completed the "Story of Hatred" and is now concentrating on getting Diablo 5 ready for release. This marks a significant shift for Diablo 4, which had followed an annual expansion model since launch.

Despite the end of expansions, Diablo 4 will not be abandoned, as Blizzard intends to keep delivering seasonal content as a primary focus alongside Diablo 5's development. Gibson said these seasons will help shape the story of Diablo 5, which is set 100 years after the events of Diablo 4 in a world where Diablo has triumphed and plunged Sanctuary into apocalypse; the studio wants to gauge player reactions season by season before finalising how that continuity unfolds. Blizzard is targeting a 2029 release for Diablo 5, meaning fans will have to wait until then for the next major paid DLC-style content.
