Manchester City has been found guilty of the majority of 115 Premier League financial rule charges relating to breaches between 2009 and 2018. Whilst many rival club supporters hope the guilty verdict might lead to the club being stripped of eight titles won during this period, the Premier League and its constituent clubs have reportedly shown little appetite for such a drastic punishment. An independent disciplinary panel will make the final decision on sanctions at a forthcoming "sanction hearing", though financial fines, points deductions or possible expulsion are considered more likely outcomes than title stripping.

The charges centre on allegations that City inflated sponsorship revenue from connected companies and made undisclosed payments to circumvent financial regulations, giving them an unfair competitive advantage. However, the decision on sanctions is complicated by the difficulty in quantifying exactly how much City benefited on the pitch from rule breaches, and by the awkward precedent any retrospective action might set—for instance, Chelsea won multiple trophies in the 2010s whilst also breaching financial rules. Additionally, during an alleged failure to cooperate with investigations between December 2018 and February 2023, Liverpool finished runners-up to City by a single point in both 2019 and 2022, raising questions about whether retrospective action should apply to that later period as well.
