Country singer Lainey Wilson has revealed that she occasionally writes songs purely as a joke, only for her team to push hard for them to be recorded because they thought the results were genuinely good. Speaking on Taste of Country Nights with Evan Paul, Wilson explained that despite the pressure, she has turned such tracks down, insisting they were never meant to be taken seriously. The admission offers a glimpse into her songwriting process and the sometimes unpredictable path a track takes from private joke to potential single.

Wilson said that, for the most part, she and her team agree on which songs make the cut, noting that "the cream rises to the top" despite plenty of weak ideas along the way — including suggestions from her own mother, whom she jokingly told to "mind your business and go teach school." The interview comes during a busy period for the singer, who released the Netflix documentary Keepin' Country Cool in April, married Devlin "Duck" Hodges in May, performed at CMA Fest and released "Phone, Keys, Wallet" with John Mayer in June, and has been touring as support for Chris Stapleton.
