PIP claims outnumber election majorities in 212 Labour-held constituencies
An analysis found that 212 Labour MPs in England and Wales represent constituencies with more Personal Independence Payment (PIP) claimants than the size of their 2024 election majorities. The figures highlight the political difficulty of reducing welfare spending, as many Labour MPs could face significant local opposition to benefit reforms.
PIP recipients in England and Wales reached 4.09 million in July, with spending rising from £16.3 billion in 2019–20 to £27.3 billion in 2024–25 and forecast to reach £41.5 billion by 2030–31. The Government has commissioned a review of the system, while Labour leaders have rejected “crude cuts” and Conservatives have called for tighter eligibility and measures to support employment.
