North West Reveals How She Makes Beats & Her Favorite Song on Her Dad’s ‘Graduation’ Album
North West has discussed how she creates music and named her favourite track from her father Ye’s album *Graduation*. In an interview with YouTube host Emwell, she said she usually listens to music first to decide what kind of song or beat to make, and prefers building around a sample.
North said she uses Ableton now and previously played on an ASR. She also recalled attending daily studio sessions with Ye during a rap camp in Japan, where practising fast rapping a cappella helped her improve. Asked about *Graduation*, she chose “Homecoming”; she also showed off drawing, wig-making and speaking with her mouth closed.
In short
- North West says “Homecoming” is her favourite track on *Graduation*.
- She uses Ableton and often starts with a sample.

Explained simply
North West is the daughter of Ye, the rapper and producer formerly known as Kanye West. Ye released Graduation in 2007, an album that blended hip-hop with electronic sounds and became one of his best-known records.
Making beats involves arranging sounds and rhythms to form the backing for a song. Ableton is music-making software, while an ASR is a type of music sampler, a device used to record and rearrange sounds; samples can include parts of existing recordings. “Homecoming”, the track North named, features singer Chris Martin of Coldplay.
