Northrop’s robot space mechanic is a new way to keep satellites at work longer

Northrop Grumman is replacing its first satellite life-extension spacecraft on an Optus communications satellite with a more flexible robotic servicing system. The change matters because satellites often stop operating when they exhaust station-keeping fuel rather than when their main equipment fails, so extending their orbital life could preserve valuable services and revenue.

A Mission Extension Vehicle detached from the Optus satellite after more than a year, while four newer Northrop spacecraft launched in July are travelling towards geostationary orbit, roughly 27,000 miles above Earth. In 2027, the Mission Robotic Vehicle is expected to use robotic arms to attach a propulsion-focused Mission Extension Pod to Optus, potentially extending a satellite launched in 2009 beyond its original 15-year design life by about six years. Northrop says its two existing MEVs have provided 10 years of extension across three customer satellites; the new model lets operators own permanent pods while the reusable robotic vehicle can serve additional spacecraft.
