Instagram’s video app extends to Apple TV for living-room viewing

The Verge ·

Meta has brought Instagram for TV to Apple TV, extending its effort to make Reels and other video content available on living-room screens. The launch received little attention, but it gives Instagram another platform as it looks to expand beyond short-form viewing.

Instagram first tested its TV-focused video app in December last year, then added features in June. It is also available on Amazon Fire TV, Samsung Smart TVs and Google TV. Apple TV appeared on the app’s compatibility list on 23 October; the list had included only iPad and iOS as recently as 18 October. The app may support Instagram’s plans for longer, episodic videos and microdramas.

In short

  • Instagram for TV is now available on Apple TV.
  • The app focuses on Reels and other video content.
  • The move may support longer-form shows and microdramas.

Explained simply

Instagram is a social media service owned by Meta, best known for sharing photos and short videos. Reels are short videos that people can watch and share in the app. Instagram has also been making video available through apps designed for television screens.

Apple TV is Apple’s streaming device, which connects a television to apps and online video services. Instagram’s TV app is also available on some devices from Amazon, Samsung and Google. A living-room version lets people watch Instagram videos on a larger screen, while Meta explores formats such as longer series and microdramas—short, episodic dramas made for mobile viewing.
