Neonatal nurse Amanda Reid has been struck off the Nursing and Midwifery Council register after falsely claiming she had terminal leukaemia to obtain ill-health retirement payments. She deceived relatives, healthcare professionals and the Scottish Pensions Authority, receiving £185,422.95 before being jailed for two years for fraud.

Between April 2021 and August 2024, Reid shaved her head, used a cannula and forged 16 medical letters to support her claims, while also obtaining controlled NHS drugs fraudulently. The disciplinary panel found her dishonesty sustained, deliberate and premeditated, with no evidence of insight or remorse; some of the money was spent on a Dubai trip.
