Brazilian student dies after alleged fentanyl-laced cocaine use in New York dorm
Annabel Richter, a 19-year-old Brazilian student at New York’s Fashion Institute of Technology, died in her dorm after taking cocaine that prosecutors allege was contaminated with fentanyl. Federal prosecutors have charged two men in connection with the drug supply, and one is also accused of raping Richter while she was incapacitated.
The indictment alleges Moises Freire brought the drugs to Nagler Hall on 18 March after obtaining them from Brian Peralta Cabrera; another student also suffered fentanyl poisoning but survived. Prosecutors say Freire took and shared photographs of Richter while she was unconscious. Richter’s family later held a campus vigil, while students said the college initially described the incident only as a medical emergency.

Fentanyl is a powerful opioid used in some medicines and also sold illegally. When mixed into cocaine without a person’s knowledge, even a small amount can cause a fatal overdose; people taking the cocaine may not know it contains fentanyl.
The Fashion Institute of Technology is a college in New York City, where students including Richter lived in campus accommodation. In this case, prosecutors allege that the drugs passed from Brian Peralta Cabrera to fellow student Moises Freire, who brought them to the dorm; another student was also poisoned but survived.
The case involves allegations about the drug supply and about what happened to Richter while she was unconscious. The charges are claims that must be tested in court, and the case has drawn attention to the risks of contaminated drugs and how colleges communicate with students after a serious incident.
