NYPD says school officials stonewalled probe into ‘bullied’ slain student — after Mamdani crowed about helping family
The NYPD says New York City education officials initially withheld information sought in its investigation into the fatal shooting of 15-year-old Javits Frimpong, including material potentially relevant to claims he was bullied. The dispute has drawn attention because Mayor Zohran Mamdani had recently publicised his efforts to help Frimpong’s mother travel from Ghana to attend her son’s funeral.
The Department of Education said it had co-operated and supplied all requested materials, but the police did not confirm that account, and the department did not say whether a subpoena was involved. The chief of detectives said investigators were examining bullying alongside other possibilities. Frimpong’s father said the school principal had told him two days before the shooting that his son had trouble with two students, who were suspended; the teenager was shot while walking to school on 29 October.
