Curry Barker's low-budget horror film Obsession has overtaken Tom Hardy's Venom: The Last Dance to become one of the biggest surprise box office stories of the year. Despite a production budget under $1 million and having already left cinemas for PVOD and streaming, the film has continued to chip away at box office records nearly six weeks after its release, underlining how a small independent horror title can outperform major studio franchise instalments.

Obsession has surpassed Venom: The Last Dance's $474 million global haul, a film made on a budget more than 110 times larger. It has also become the first sub-million-dollar-budget film this century to earn over $200 million, the highest-grossing non-animated original film of the past decade, and the highest-grossing original horror movie of the century. Venom: The Last Dance, directed by Kelly Marcel and starring Hardy as Eddie Brock, closed out Sony's Venom trilogy in 2024.
