Minnesota authorities have named the two civilians killed and identified the police officers injured in a shooting at a Minneapolis apartment complex on Wednesday. The gunman, Carlton Neal Johnson II, 35, opened fire during a domestic child custody exchange before being fatally shot by police, an incident that also left two officers wounded and raises fresh questions about violence linked to domestic disputes and building security.

The civilians who died were named as residents Dale Henry Spry, 63, and Muse A. Afrah, 61, with one dying at the scene and the other in hospital, the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension said. Johnson reportedly shot a woman he had previously been in a relationship with outside the building, then a facility worker inside, before going to the ninth floor and shooting the two residents. Officers Joseph Michnowski and Yahye Ahmed were both hit by gunfire, with Ahmed released from hospital and Michnowski still being treated; a third officer, Ernest Boateng, was cut by glass while breaking into a locked patrol car and was treated and released. Officer Liban Mohamed Ibrahim was confirmed to have fired his weapon, with investigators still checking whether others did too, and it later emerged Johnson had been facing eviction from the building.
