Officials in the United States are investigating what caused an Amazon-branded cargo plane to overshoot the runway while landing at Miami International Airport on Sunday, in a crash that killed five people and seriously injured five others. The Boeing 767-300, operated by charter firm 21 Air, crossed a road beyond the runway and struck several vehicles, and it remains unclear whether the dead were on board the aircraft, on the ground, or both. The incident, which grounded flights at the airport and prompted a large emergency response, has raised questions about what went wrong during landing.

Miami-Dade County Mayor Daniella Levine Cava said rescue crews reached the scene within seconds, while fire chief Raied Jadallah said three of the injured were in critical condition, with some trapped inside or under vehicles. More than 200 firefighters attended after the plane caught fire, and the National Transportation Safety Board is leading the investigation, with a briefing due on Monday. Flight-tracking data showed the aircraft was travelling at 112 knots as it left the usable runway amid light thunderstorms and gusting winds, and both Amazon and 21 Air said they were co-operating fully with investigators.
