Okada Junichi-Hosted ‘The Floor’ Quiz Format Returns to Nippon TV for Season 2 in Japan (EXCLUSIVE)

Variety · 2 hours ago

Nippon TV has commissioned a second season of "The Floor," the game show format from Talpa Studios, marking a significant vote of confidence after the show's first full adaptation in Asia earlier this year. The new season will premiere on 21 October as a weekly series with an all-celebrity line-up of 32 contestants, expanding on its original one-off format. Actor Okada Junichi, whose profile has grown internationally following Netflix's "Last Samurai Standing," returns as host, and broadcaster executives credit the show's blend of quiz gameplay and psychological tension with setting it apart from conventional Japanese quiz formats.

"The Floor" debuted in Japan in March as a three-hour prime-time special, and contestants compete in head-to-head knowledge duels across a grid of 100 illuminated tiles covering varied subjects; winners absorb their opponent's tile while losers are eliminated. Whoever controls the entire grid after eight episodes wins €100,000 (about $116,383). The format has now been sold in more than 30 territories for Talpa Studios, founded by John de Mol, and Nippon TV's recommission is being framed as a notable achievement given Japan's highly competitive broadcasting market, where renewals for international formats are not guaranteed.
