Olivia Rodrigo has released her previously unreleased song ‘Serena Joy’ as a 500-copy CD exclusive, with all copies selling out at an independent California record shop. The Handmaid’s Tale-inspired track is intended to support local record retail and build momentum for Rodrigo’s forthcoming Daisy Chain Fields festival, whose proceeds will support organisations working for women and girls.

The CDs were sold at Analog Record Shop in Tustin, about eight miles from Irvine’s Great Park, where the all-women festival takes place on 29 August. ‘Serena Joy’, named after the character from Margaret Atwood’s dystopian novel, was recorded for Rodrigo’s June album but omitted from its final tracklist; the shop said it would be available three days before a wider release, though Rodrigo has not confirmed a digital launch.

  • All 500 limited-edition ‘Serena Joy’ CDs have sold out.
  • The song references The Handmaid’s Tale character Serena Joy.
  • It precedes Rodrigo’s Daisy Chain Fields festival.

Olivia Rodrigo is a US singer and songwriter known for pop songs about teenage life and relationships. She rose to prominence with her 2021 debut album Sour, followed by Guts in 2023, and has since become one of the most prominent younger artists in mainstream pop.

Serena Joy is a character in The Handmaid’s Tale, Margaret Atwood’s novel about a society in which women’s freedoms are severely restricted. The story has also been adapted for television, making its characters widely recognisable beyond the book’s readers.

Independent record shops are smaller retailers that often sell limited releases to attract music fans and support physical formats such as CDs and vinyl. Rodrigo’s Daisy Chain Fields is an all-women music festival in California, with proceeds intended for groups that support women and girls.
