Omar Sy on Taking Creative Control of Netflix’s ‘Lupin’ and Why ‘Black Dumas’ Will Spark Political Debate in France
Omar Sy says he secured greater creative control as a condition of returning to Netflix’s “Lupin”, and is now co-showrunner with Louis Leterrier for its fourth part. The change gives Sy more influence over decisions as the series expands its story and style, while aiming to retain the qualities that made it a global hit.
The new part launches on 23 October and is set four years after Part 3: Assane is in prison when a copycat begins carrying out elaborate heists in his name. Sy and Leterrier are using a larger budget to introduce new technology and move further from Maurice Leblanc’s novels. Sy’s film “Black Dumas”, about Thomas-Alexandre Dumas, France’s first Black general, is due in October 2027, shortly after the French presidential election; Sy expects it to prompt debate and hopes discussions remain thoughtful.
