On This Day in 1961, Patsy Cline Released the Legendary Hit Single That She Recorded in a Single Take
Patsy Cline released “Crazy” on 16 October 1961; the song went on to reach No. 2 on the country chart and become a top 10 pop hit. Its success was notable because Cline had initially resisted recording it, in part because she felt she could not reproduce songwriter Willie Nelson’s distinctive phrasing.
Nelson’s arrangement, influenced by jazz and built around unusual chord voicings, was more complex than the simple three-chord songs common at the time, and several country singers had declined it. Producer Owen Bradley believed it suited Cline; musicians and the Jordanaires spent four hours recording the backing track, and Cline recorded her vocal in a single take a few weeks later. Accounts differ on how the demo reached her, but both say Nelson waited outside while it was played to her.
