On This Day in 1975, a Legendary Rock Band Played Its Final Concert Before Two Members Went on to Join the Rolling Stones and The Who
Faces played their final concert in Minneapolis on 1 November 1975, as tensions grew over Rod Stewart’s rising solo career and Ronnie Wood’s ties to the Rolling Stones. The band announced its split the following month, ending a run that had begun in 1969.
Wood officially joined the Rolling Stones in 1976, while Stewart became a major solo star. After Keith Moon’s death, drummer Kenney Jones joined The Who, where he remained until 1988; keyboardist Ian McLagan went on to work as a session musician and record with artists including Bob Dylan and Bonnie Raitt.
In short
- Faces played their final show on 1 November 1975.
- Ronnie Wood later joined the Rolling Stones.
- Kenney Jones went on to play with The Who.
Explained simply
Faces formed in 1969 from members of the Small Faces and singer Rod Stewart. The group combined a loose, blues-influenced rock sound with Stewart’s distinctive voice, while guitarist Ronnie Wood, drummer Kenney Jones and keyboardist Ian McLagan were central to its line-up.
Stewart’s growing solo career brought him increasing success outside the band, while Wood had connections with the Rolling Stones. After Faces ended, Wood joined the Stones, Stewart pursued a solo career, and Jones later joined The Who. The band’s story sits at the meeting point between a close-knit group and the separate careers its members built in British rock.
