The song became one of Jackson’s defining hits and later won CMA awards for Song and Single of the Year, reflecting its enduring popularity as a coming-of-age anthem.

Although named after the river in northern Georgia near Jackson’s hometown of Newnan, the song’s themes of small-town youth and everyday life were intended to have wider appeal. Co-writer Jim McBride developed the initial idea after reading about the river, then completed it with Jackson on his tour bus between Tallahassee and Thibodaux, Louisiana; the band reportedly learned and performed it that same night.
