The result matters beyond the district itself because Neal, 77, is the senior Democrat on the House Ways and Means Committee, which oversees tax policy and major economic legislation, and his win preserves the seniority-based influence that comes with his nearly four-decade tenure in Congress.

Whalen, 39, campaigned on Medicare for All, higher taxes on the wealthy, abolishing Immigration and Customs Enforcement, and refusing corporate PAC donations, framing Neal as an establishment figure resistant to challenging entrenched wealth and power. Neal countered by emphasising the clout his seniority brings to western Massachusetts. The contest echoed a wider Democratic Party debate over ageing leadership, underlined by 80-year-old Senator Ed Markey's own primary win the same night against a much younger moderate rival. No Republican has filed to contest the seat in the general election.
