Onimusha PS5 Drops the Series’ Classic Puzzle Boxes

Push Square · 3 hours ago

Onimusha: Way of the Sword, the upcoming PS5 instalment in Capcom's samurai action series, will not feature the franchise's traditional puzzle boxes, according to a Game Informer preview. Director Satoru Nihei confirmed the change after previewers noted their absence, explaining that puzzle elements have instead been woven directly into the game's stages to break up the combat rather than being confined to standalone containers. The shift appears aimed at improving pacing, keeping the focus on the game's action-driven combat system.

Nihei described how the traditional decoder boxes have been replaced by environmental puzzles, such as one involving ornamental masks and interpreting shafts of light to solve a sequence, which are intended to feel more integrated into gameplay flow. He acknowledged that constant action needs breathing room, saying these puzzle sections give players something to think about between fights. Combat remains the game's central focus, with the puzzle elements serving a supporting role rather than the loot-driven exploration purpose the boxes previously served.
