OpenAI ad service can bill customers for up to one day after they pause campaigns

The Register · 9 hours ago

OpenAI’s ChatGPT advertising service may continue displaying and charging for adverts for up to one business day after an advertiser pauses or changes a campaign. The issue matters because it limits advertisers’ immediate control over spending, even where campaigns have been marked as paused.

A UK business, Excel4Business, said it saw ads run overnight after pausing US and Canadian campaigns. OpenAI support initially described this as a defect and identified £60.72 in invalid charges, plus about £6.47 from a later recurrence, but later cited its advertising terms: paused campaigns count as changes, and advertisers remain liable for ads delivered for up to one business day afterwards. OpenAI is expanding ChatGPT Ads internationally as it seeks additional revenue alongside its paid subscriptions.

  • Paused ChatGPT ad campaigns may still run for one business day.
  • Advertisers remain liable for charges during that period.
  • OpenAI initially called one customer’s case a defect.
