The heads of OpenAI, Anthropic, and Hugging Face have told the United Nations that the rapid pace of artificial intelligence development and its associated risks require international coordination and common standards. This comes as a direct counterpoint to the Trump administration's technology advisor, Michael Kratsios, who rejected any new global AI regulation, arguing that international governance structures could constrain development and harm American competitiveness.

At the UN conference, Sam Altman called for shared standards on measuring AI capabilities, assessing risks, maintaining human oversight, and incident reporting protocols. Anthropic's Dario Amodei emphasised that AI "if managed poorly" could pose risks to humanity and committed to slowing development as necessary to ensure safety, whilst Hugging Face's Clement Delangue called for stronger monitoring and incident disclosure standards. In contrast, Kratsios and President Trump stressed that the US leads China in AI development and that "whoever wins AI, wins," opposing any slowdown that might undermine American advantage.
