OpenAI has announced Dots, always-on AI assistants designed to carry out tasks across connected apps in the background and adapt to users’ preferences. The launch follows Meta’s introduction of its Muse assistant and adds to the competition over AI agents that can take actions for users.

Powered by OpenAI’s GPT-6 Astra model, Dots use a cloud computer to access a browser and more than 4,000 apps, and can be used through text or voice, including in Slack and Microsoft Teams. Users can currently create one Dot, which sends progress updates and questions; OpenAI says safeguards include rules for independent actions and checks against custom instructions. Dots are rolling out to ChatGPT Pro, Business Premium and Enterprise users, while companies can test specialist agents.
