OpenAI, ready to IPO in 2027, now counts majority of sales from enterprises, Brockman says
OpenAI President Greg Brockman said the company now earns most of its revenue from business customers and could be ready to go public in 2027. The shift towards enterprise sales puts OpenAI in closer competition with Anthropic as both seek to expand their business customer base.
Speaking at a technology conference in Napa, California, Brockman said OpenAI is increasing business sales and promoting its Codex agent. Asked whether the company would be ready for an initial public offering next year, he replied, “I think so.” OpenAI has also been stepping up fundraising after delaying its IPO plans.
In short
- Enterprise customers now provide most of OpenAI’s revenue.
- Greg Brockman sees 2027 as a possible IPO year.
- OpenAI is expanding business sales amid competition with Anthropic.
Steelman: both sides, in good faith
The strongest fair case each way — we don't pick a winner.
The case for
A growing enterprise business could show that OpenAI’s products are useful beyond consumer chat and have a durable source of revenue. Going public in 2027 could give the company access to capital and impose greater financial disclosure, potentially supporting investment while giving shareholders more information.
The case against
A possible IPO may come before the company has shown that its recent growth can be sustained, especially as it competes intensely for business customers and continues to raise funds. Public-market pressure for growth and returns could also complicate long-term investment and responsible development of powerful AI systems.
Explained simply
OpenAI is an artificial intelligence company best known for ChatGPT, a tool that can answer questions and generate text. It also sells AI products to businesses, which can use them for tasks such as writing, coding and customer support.
Greg Brockman is OpenAI’s president. Anthropic, another AI company, is a rival seeking business customers too; its products include the Claude assistant. An initial public offering, or IPO, is when a company sells shares to the public for the first time, giving it a new way to raise money and allowing investors to buy a stake.
