OpenAI has helped establish an independent nine-member panel of prominent mathematicians to advise it and other AI companies on mathematical research. The move follows a series of impressive AI-generated mathematical results that created reputational problems, prompting concerns about attribution, academic standards, communication and how research findings are released.

The Advisory Group on Mathematics and Artificial Intelligence will be hosted by Princeton’s Institute for Advanced Study and may receive early access to OpenAI research. It says it can offer unsolicited and public advice, while members will not be paid by OpenAI; however, researchers remain uncertain about the panel’s selection, remit, influence and ability to represent the wider mathematical community.
