OpenAI has announced plans to spend $750 billion on computing infrastructure through 2030, roughly 25% higher than its earlier estimate, as it pushes ahead despite reports that its flagship Stargate data centre project has stalled. The first step in this expanded build-out is Project Camellia, a $20 billion data centre campus in Georgia, underscoring how aggressively the company is racing to secure power and compute capacity to support its AI ambitions.

Project Camellia will span 1,400 acres northwest of Savannah and draw at least 3.2 gigawatts from utility Georgia Power, with capacity expected online between 2028 and 2032; OpenAI says it will cover the full infrastructure and electricity costs and has agreed to cut its power draw by up to 1 gigawatt during peak demand. The firm is also receiving a 50% property tax abatement for 15 years from Effingham County. Neither company has confirmed the power source, but Georgia Power filings suggest most new capacity will come from natural gas, more than doubling the utility's gas fleet, alongside batteries and solar. OpenAI has also hired former xAI executive Brett Mayo to lead construction, notable given a lawsuit alleging xAI's Colossus data centre in Memphis ran unpermitted gas turbines that damaged local air quality.
