OpenBSD 8.0 beefs up virtual machines and gets a taste of Wine

The Register ·

OpenBSD 8.0 adds support for larger virtual machines and improves graphics and wireless hardware support. It also includes a proposed 64-bit Wine port, which could let users run 64-bit Windows applications on OpenBSD.

The VMM/VMD hypervisor can now give each guest up to 64 virtual CPUs, while the x86-64 kernel’s virtual address space has grown from 4 GB to 512 GB. Other changes include hibernation on Arm64, faster encrypted swap on Arm64 and x86-64, and updates to OpenSSH, LibreSSL, the graphics driver stack and Clang/LLVM. The release is the project’s 61st; its four listed errata include no new fixes for the security flaws disclosed shortly before release, which had already been fixed in OpenBSD 7.9. The release artwork and song also poke fun at AI-generated content.
