Wales made an outstanding start to the Commonwealth Games track cycling programme in Glasgow, winning gold, silver and bronze on the opening night at the Sir Chris Hoy Velodrome. The women’s team sprint trio of Emma Finucane, Lowri Thomas and Rhian Edmunds led the way with victory over England, underlining Wales’s strength in the event and giving Finucane momentum for her further races this week.

The sprint team set a Commonwealth Games record in qualifying before defeating Katy Marchant, Sophia Capewell and Rhianna Parris-Smith in the final. Visually impaired rider James Ball and guide Matt Rotherham won tandem silver, while Ciara Oliva helped Wales take women’s team pursuit bronze after returning from retirement; her husband Lewis missed a planned bronze-race appearance after team-mate Ioan Hepburn withdrew through illness.
