An animal-rights petition in Oregon that would have effectively banned hunting, fishing and ranching, along with a range of other common agricultural and outdoor activities, has failed to secure a place on the state's November ballot. Initiative Petition 28 had drawn criticism for its broad scope, which campaigners said would have criminalised normal practices relied upon by hunters, anglers and farmers across the state.

The measure had reportedly gathered around 125,000 signatures before falling short of qualifying for the ballot.
