Austria has selected Markus Schleinzer’s black-and-white period drama Rose as its submission for the 2027 Oscars’ Best International Feature category. The choice puts the film, led by Sandra Hüller, into the awards race and extends Hüller’s strong recent profile after acclaimed international roles and a previous Oscar nomination.
Set in 17th-century rural Germany, Rose follows a woman who disguises herself as a male farmer to gain freedoms unavailable to women, drawing on hundreds of similar historical cases.
