Austria has selected Markus Schleinzer’s black-and-white period drama Rose as its submission for the 2027 Oscars’ Best International Feature category. The choice puts the film, led by Sandra Hüller, into the awards race and extends Hüller’s strong recent profile after acclaimed international roles and a previous Oscar nomination.

Set in 17th-century rural Germany, Rose follows a woman who disguises herself as a male farmer to gain freedoms unavailable to women, drawing on hundreds of similar historical cases. It premiered at the Berlin Film Festival, where Hüller won the Silver Bear for Best Lead Performance; Mubi will distribute it in North America, the UK, Italy, Australia and Latin America. The Oscar shortlist will be announced on 15 December, nominees on 21 January 2027, and the ceremony will take place on 14 March 2027.

The Oscars are annual film awards run by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences in the United States. In the Best International Feature category, each country may put forward one film, with a shortlist and then five nominated films chosen by Academy voters.

Sandra Hüller is a German actor whose recent work has brought her wider international attention, including an Oscar nomination for Anatomy of a Fall. Markus Schleinzer is an Austrian director, and Rose is set in rural Germany during the 1600s, when women had far fewer legal and social freedoms than men.

The film’s central idea draws on historical records of women who lived as men in order to work, inherit property or move more freely. Its selection matters because it makes the film Austria’s official contender in an international awards process that can increase a film’s visibility, distribution and audience.
