Oskar Eustis, the longtime artistic director of Off-Broadway's Public Theater, has announced he will step down after 23 years in the role. Eustis, who is credited with overseeing landmark productions such as Hamilton and Fun Home, will not renew his contract when it expires on 31 July 2028, timing his departure to coincide with the theatre's 60th anniversary. His exit marks the end of a significant era for one of New York's most influential non-profit theatres, which under his leadership navigated the Covid-19 pandemic and its aftermath while continuing to champion new and accessible work.

During his tenure, Eustis guided the development of two Pulitzer Prize-winning dramas, Hamilton (2016) and Sweat (2017), as well as the Tony-winning 2009 revival of Hair, alongside numerous other productions that transferred to Broadway, including Suffs and Here Lies Love. He said he had long hoped his 70th birthday would be the right moment to hand the theatre to a new generation, describing it as having emerged from recent crises "robust and thriving". The Public's board, chaired by Luis A. Miranda Jr, will form a search committee this autumn with the aim of naming his successor next year.
