Ronnie O'Sullivan was knocked out of the Shanghai Masters in the second round after a 6-4 defeat by defending champion Kyren Wilson. The result ends a promising start to the seven-time world champion's season and sees Wilson advance to a quarter-final against Mark Williams, who beat Chris Wakelin 6-5.

Wilson took a 3-1 lead with breaks of 113 and 91, before O'Sullivan hit back with three consecutive centuries (100, 111 and 131) to move 4-3 ahead. Wilson then won the final three frames with runs of 89, 79 and 97 to seal victory, and afterwards praised O'Sullivan's drawing power with the crowd, noting he had brought his children to watch. Elsewhere in the tournament, Neil Robertson fought back from 5-2 down to beat Xiao Guodong 6-5 despite Xiao compiling a maximum 147 break, while Judd Trump also reached the quarter-finals with a 6-4 win over Barry Hawkins.
