The North American box office measures ticket sales in the United States and Canada. A film’s opening weekend is its first few days in cinemas, and studios use early forecasts and audience surveys to gauge how a release is performing.

Universal and Sony are the studios behind the two films. The Social Reckoning is Aaron Sorkin’s follow-up to The Social Network, a drama about Facebook’s early years; it focuses on the company and social media. Opening results can affect how cinemas schedule films and how studios judge their prospects, while reviews and audience scores offer different measures of reception.
