Blizzard says seasonal hero releases are now “the right thing” for Overwatch, following a major 2026 relaunch that will add 10 heroes and support a year-long story arc. Although releasing 10 heroes in one year may not be repeated, the company intends to maintain a regular seasonal cadence, arguing that the approach has restored interest and created a sustainable rhythm for the live-service game.

The February update introduced five heroes at once, removed “2” from the sequel’s title and more than doubled Overwatch’s concurrent Steam player count. Seasonal releases are expected to add roughly five or six heroes annually, taking the roster from 55 by the end of 2026 to about 60 in 2027, compared with 21 at launch. The next season begins on 6 October with Doctrine, a vampire-inspired support hero, while a February showcase will outline the game’s future.
