Owono out of Cup of Nations qualifiers
Jesus Owono has been left out of Equatorial Guinea’s squad for this month’s Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers after Tenerife forward Jesus de Miguel died following a collision involving the two players. The decision comes as Owono says he is struggling to process what happened and is focused on grieving.
De Miguel died on Tuesday, a day after the incident during a Spanish second division match between Andorra and Tenerife. Owono, 25, has been Equatorial Guinea’s first-choice goalkeeper since his teens and played in the team’s first two qualifiers for the 2027 finals. He will miss matches against Zimbabwe in Bata on 12 November and in Harare on 16 November; the federation said he was experiencing profound grief. Owono also deactivated his Instagram account after receiving online abuse.
