‘Ozempic rigs’: Offshore firms install extra fridges for slimming jabs as workers face losing jobs under strict new weight limit

Daily Mail ·

Oil and gas firms are adding fridges on offshore installations so workers can store weight-loss injections as they try to meet a new helicopter weight limit. The 124kg cap is intended to ensure passengers can be winched to safety in an emergency, but those who do not meet it could be redeployed or lose their jobs.

Offshore Energies UK estimates 240 to 300 workers remain above the limit, down from about 800 two months ago. Its health and safety manager said reports suggest up to 60 per cent of offshore staff are using weight-loss jabs, including Ozempic and Mounjaro. The RMT union accepts safety must come first but says the policy should be proportionate, evidence-based and developed with workers.

In short

  • Offshore firms are storing weight-loss jabs for workers.
  • A 124kg helicopter limit took effect on Sunday.
  • The RMT is concerned about how the policy is applied.
