At al-Mughayyir boys school in the occupied West Bank, staff and parents describe growing fear for children's safety as settler-related violence surges in the area. Six people, including three pupils, have been killed in the village this year, prompting the school to install barbed-wire fencing and reinforced gates, with some parents keeping their children home for the new school year.

Among those killed was 14-year-old Aws al-Naasan, shot dead by a settler outside the school gates in April in an incident that also killed a teacher's brother; the Israeli military said a reservist had fired after stones were thrown at his car, and he was later suspended pending investigation. Two more pupils and a recent school leaver were shot dead by Israeli forces over the summer during further settler attacks and incursions, with the army saying it responded to "violent riots" in each case. The school, on the edge of an isolated village increasingly surrounded by Jewish settler outposts, now has ambulances stationed outside and volunteer parents guarding the gates, while teachers drill pupils on staying calm and not reacting if soldiers or settlers approach.
