Brothers’ clash with Russian mob to open New York Film Festival

Variety · 4 hours ago

James Gray's crime drama 'Paper Tiger' has been selected as the opening night film for the 64th New York Film Festival, premiering on September 25. The film stars Adam Driver, Scarlett Johansson, and Miles Teller in a 1986-set narrative about two brothers—one drawn into organised crime and the other, a former police officer, forced to intervene. The project generated substantial acclaim at its Cannes debut, earning an extended standing ovation.

This marks Gray's fourth appearance at the New York Film Festival, reinforcing his position as a regular presence in the festival's programming. Opening night selections hold particular significance within awards considerations; whilst only one opener has secured the best picture Oscar, thirteen opening selections throughout the festival's history have received best picture nominations. Public ticket sales will begin in mid-September.
