In short

  • Amy Poehler leads Peacock’s archaeological comedy *Dig*.
  • Four women uncover a priceless artefact in Greece.
  • Their discovery draws them into an international conspiracy.

Explained simply

Archaeologists study human history by examining objects, buildings and other remains from the past. Excavations are organised digs where teams uncover and record these finds, often working under time pressure and with rules about how artefacts should be handled and protected.

The series is based on Kate Myers’ novel Excavation and centres on four women archaeologists working at a site in Greece. Amy Poehler plays Elise, with Antonia Thomas, Geraldine Viswanathan and Fina Strazza as fellow archaeologists; Hugh Laurie plays Neville, the head of the team.

The story brings together the day-to-day work and tensions of a team with a mystery involving a valuable artefact. Its setting draws on a familiar feature of adventure stories—archaeological discoveries can raise questions about who owns the past and how it should be preserved.
