Pastor and dad of five dies after suffering horror injury in cruise ship swimming pool while celebrating his son’s wedding

Daily Mail · 1 hour ago

A Minnesota pastor and father of five has died after falling into a cruise ship swimming pool and suffering a catastrophic spinal injury while celebrating his son's wedding. Stephen Duane Junker, 58, was found face down and unresponsive in the pool aboard Princess Cruises' Sun Princess off the coast of Italy on 16 August, and despite emergency surgery, he died on 4 September. His death highlights the sometimes fatal risks of accidents at sea and the difficulty of accessing specialist care when medical emergencies occur far from home.

Junker, a pastor at Chippewa Lutheran Church in Brandon, was rescued by the Italian coast guard and taken to hospital in Naples, where doctors found severe compression of his spinal cord at the C3-C4 level in his neck. Emergency surgery on 17 August left him diagnosed as quadriplegic and unable to breathe unaided, though he was later flown home to Rochester, Minnesota, and briefly showed signs of improvement, communicating with family through nods and facial expressions before further tests revealed his injuries were untreatable. He is survived by his wife, Jeanine, their five children and a grandson, with his family thanking Mayo Clinic staff and GoFundMe donors for their support during his final weeks.
