Patel returns looted artifacts to Indonesian president
FBI Director Kash Patel returned eight cultural artefacts from Indonesia’s Papua region to President Prabowo Subianto in Jakarta. The handover, following research showing the objects had been illegally smuggled to the United States, highlights cooperation between the two countries to recover and repatriate cultural heritage.
The artefacts represent the Dani, Asmat and Lake Sentani communities, and include polished stone axe heads and ceremonial objects. Indonesian Culture Minister Fadli Zon said their return was part of restoring the country’s cultural sovereignty. The objects are due to be displayed at Indonesia’s National Museum.

Explained simply
Many cultural objects were removed from countries around the world during colonial periods and through illicit smuggling, ending up in foreign museums or private collections. These items—sacred masks, ceremonial objects, ancient tools—often hold deep significance for the communities they originated from. Recovering such objects and returning them to their countries of origin is called repatriation.
Indonesia has been working to retrieve items illegally smuggled from its Papua region, home to several indigenous groups including the Dani, Asmat and Lake Sentani peoples. Eight artefacts from these communities, including ceremonial objects and stone tool heads, have been held in the United States and are now being returned through cooperation between Indonesian and American authorities. They will be displayed at Indonesia's National Museum.
For Indonesia, recovering these objects restores cultural sovereignty and allows future generations to connect with their heritage. The case reflects growing international recognition that cultural items taken during colonial periods or through illegal smuggling belong in their countries of origin rather than foreign institutions.
