People buying alcohol to be able to prove their age in pubs and restaurants using digital ID on phone apps

Daily Mail · 2 days ago

New rules coming into force today allow drinkers in England and Wales to prove they are over 18 using digital ID on their smartphones, instead of relying solely on physical documents such as passports or driving licences. Pubs, bars, restaurants, music venues and shops can now accept approved proof-of-age apps, with ministers arguing this will make age checks quicker, easier and more secure while letting customers avoid carrying physical ID. Privacy campaigners have raised concerns that digital ID should not become effectively compulsory for those who prefer not to use it.

Approved providers include the Post Office, Yoti and Luciditi, with users tapping their phone against a reader or showing a time-limited QR code that confirms they are over 18 without revealing personal details such as their name or address; some apps, like Yoti, also use facial verification to prevent ID-sharing. The change is voluntary and does not alter the legal drinking age of 18 or remove existing safeguards, and follows a 2024 government consultation in which 72 per cent of respondents supported digital ID for alcohol age checks; the technology could eventually extend to tobacco and vape sales.

  • Digital ID apps can now verify age for alcohol sales in England and Wales.
  • Providers include Post Office, Yoti and Luciditi; drinking age stays 18.
  • Privacy campaigners warn digital ID must not become effectively mandatory.
