Disney+ has cancelled development of a live-action Power Rangers series led by Percy Jackson and the Olympians showrunners Jonathan E. Steinberg and Dan Shotz. The decision ends a planned revival of the long-running Hasbro franchise and reflects the financial challenges of producing expensive streaming drama based on intellectual property the platform does not own.

The project had been in development for about 18 months, with Steinberg and Shotz due to write and executive produce and 20th Television set to make it. Deadline reported that the cancellation was not due to creative concerns; instead, the likely high cost of a superhero action series and Hasbro’s ownership of Power Rangers made the economics unattractive for Disney and 20th Television.
