Pete Byrne, vocalist of British new wave band Naked Eyes, died in Los Angeles on 14 September after a brief illness. He was 74. Byrne co-founded the group with Rob Fisher in 1982, and they became known internationally for their cover of Burt Bacharach’s “Always Something There to Remind Me”, despite never touring and disbanding after two albums.

Naked Eyes’ debut, “Burning Bridges”, reached No. 32 on the Billboard 200, while the duo had four US top-40 singles between 1983 and 1984. Byrne later worked as a backing vocalist, songwriter and solo artist, and revived Naked Eyes in 2005, releasing further material through 2025. Born in Islington, he also played in several London bands, including Neon alongside future Tears for Fears members, and is survived by three children and four siblings.
